I started bringing our remote from home to the auto mechanic, etc. I would just turn the volume down slowly until it was inaudible. Worked pretty well most of the time. I also switched every TV (probably 25 of them) off when I was standing in line at the Comcast office in San Francisco. You should have seen the employees scramble to turn them back on. It was like some kind of wartime drill- "Don't let the TV's go dark!" You know how most places in the same geographic area have the same cable system?
