I posted this originally on AboutBlogging, but I thought I’d post it here too for those of you Bitter Readers who don’t go to both, because I want you to know that I’ve added a couple of things to make commenting here just that much more rewarding!
#1 … I’ve installed Lucia’s Linky Love on both this blog and the AboutBlogging blog. It’s a dofollow wordpress plugin that will enable commenters to get linkbacks to their own sites. (Currently, if you leave a comment on a blog, you do not get link “juice” for it in Google/Technorati with relation to their rankings. This plugin fixes that.) However, to prevent “human comment spammers leaving insipid, irrelevant comments just to get link-juice”, I’m setting this plugin to reward only users who comment 3 times. This way if you’re a regular participant, you get some linky love!
Another thing I’ve added is what I decided to call “Be A Community Builder”. It’s just a way of letting new commenters know that you will show them some love!
Here’s the “pledge”:
…for every new person who leaves a comment on my blog for the first time. I will:
1) Visit your blog or website
2) Visit Several Pages
3) Leave a comment on a post if have something to say
4) If I like your articles/posts, I will bookmark them in Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, or other appropriate Social Network.
5) If you tell me that you have subscribed to my RSS feed then I will subscribe to yours as well.
If you’re willing to take the Community Builder pledge(ish), saying that you’re willing to make an effort to do these things for your readers, then why not make a post or put up an icon saying so?
I created some icons which you can see here, and if you email me (my address is on my About page), I will also send you the png files with the layers if you want to edit them yourself to match your website or background a little better. Also, if you comment either here or over at AboutBlogging on the appropriate posts saying that you want to join up, I’ll add your website link to that post on AboutBlogging.

Which I think it’s just pretty darned cool. Thanks Fish!

Honestly, you are the blogger lifecoach I always wanted. Where were you in when I was in high school (I totally needed you then.) All this talk about link love and commenting, it sends me into a tizzy! This is amazing! I’m all about community building. I’m gob smacked at your effort. Sounds like I have someone to add to my RSS feed. I emailed you already, but feel free to email me at STANDUP101 (at) GMAIL (dot) COM so we can get this party started right!!
I do love pie! What a captcha!
I love your comment policy too!
LucyDee: Why thank you! I’m all aflutter with happiness that you’ve found me!
Lucia: I had fun making those up! And… all sensible people love pie. Pie is a happy thing. And thank YOU for the fantastic linky-love plugin!
Jayne, I should read your blog more often. I’m not good with computers (to put it mildly) and I’m sure I could learn a lot from you. Because Reddit, Stumbleupon, Digg is all HUH?????? to me.
You can see them yourself by going to StumbleUpon.com, Reddit.com, and Digg.com. There are others, but these are the ones I’ve found that actually send me traffic.
These are sites where people can submit articles they find useful from blogs (or regular websites), and then others of their users visit the pages and vote on whether or not they find it worthwhile.
The biggest traffic generator for me has been StumbleUpon… by far.
If I had the brains to work out how to sort out an RSS feed, I would install one onto my site and do the reciprocal thingy…but I don’t. If you can learn me how do computer proper, I’ll be ded grateful.
Hi Agnes! You can subscribe to someone’s feed simply by hitting Alt-J in IE 7, or in Firefox, in the address bar at the top is one of those little orange RSS icons.
Instead of using browsers though, I use Google Feed Reader. I wrote an article on the top three, which you can see at About Blogging. It’s so much easier to keep track of sites you like in a Feed Reader. Before I used it, I was trying to manually keep up with about two dozen sites every day. Now, I can easily keep up with a hundred, and I add more all the time.
By the way, I’ve already subscribed to HexMyEx ages ago! It’s one of my fav humor sites!
Oh, and if you still need help after reading this convoluted reply, email me at bitterwomen [at] bloggerbingo [dot] com and I’ll help if I can!
Hellooooo! Well, you learn something new every day, don’t you? so, I have subscribed to your feeder thingy and am glad you have done same, although I had absolutely no idea that you could! Thanks v. much for the tip!
The first time I saw Bitterwomen, I really thought this is something I could really relate to — a community hub for women. Not simply a woman indeed, but an intelligent one. Your way of marketing your blog through your commenting policy is really awesome!
I’m glad you found us!
