Flaming…. mouse.
This story will, if nothing else, educate people as to why people from various other parts of the US assume that people who are from the Southern states of the US are stupid: http://www.wsbtv.com/news/5973746/detail.html
Not that we don’t believe he would throw a live mouse onto a burning piles of leaves. Oh no. Most people wouldn’t even flinch at that small, but gruesome act. Not that we don’t believe that someone would LIE about such a thing because of “excitement during a fire”.
It’s the plain and simple fact that he used the word ‘critter’, and probably with a straight face.
My husband loves to tell the story about when he was in the States and trying to order a sandwich from Subway asked for a ‘ham’ sandwich. The young woman behind the counter asked him to repeat himself once, twice, and finally on the third time he said ‘Hay-yam’, and she said something like ‘Oh! Why didn’t you say so?’ (Keeping in mind everything ELSE he said was with a North-Eastern Coast of Scotland accent). Sure, hay-yam, why not?
Bear in mind also that these self-same snobs who snicker and judge because of regional accents could not tell the difference between Irish and Scottish accents, and British or Australian 9 times out of 10.
It’s funny, I think, how we place value and status on where we were born, as if we had any choice in the matter. Reminds me of Mrs Hannigan from ‘Annie’: ”Why any child would want to be an orphan is beyond me.”
I’m not one of these people who is ashamed of her Southern roots (although if you ask ten people whether Oklahoma was South, South-West, or Mid-West you’d get several different answers, no doubt.. it’s a running gag, really), but neither am I one of these ‘South and proud’ people. I figure that where you start in life, either economically, geographically, or socially isn’t nearly as important as what you do when you leave that place.
