LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) — Cartwheels and handstands have gotten an 11-year-old girl temporarily bounced out of her Los Angeles-area school.Deirdre Faegre was suspended for a week after repeatedly disobeying school officials who told her not to perform gymnastic stunts during lunchtime.
‘Our first concern is the safety of all children,’ San Jose-Edison Academy Principal Denise Patton told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
Patton said Deirdre could accidentally strike another student, or injure herself, and other children could get hurt trying to imitate Deirdre, who has been doing gymnastics for five years.
Deirdre’s father, Leland Faegre, said it was absurd to suspend his daughter for doing gymnastics when students were allowed to play basketball and other sports.
‘Contact sports, apparently, are fine. But this one is so dangerous it requires the cartwheel cops,’ Faegre said
This article more or less speaks for itself, but it’s further evidence that people are getting dumber by the moment.

I am becoming more and more aware of a trend in our society to be overly cautious, protective, and politically correct. This article is just another example of this disturbing reality. Maybe it is partially caused by living in this post-9/11 world where we try to take control of what we can in our personal universes while living in a world where we have so little real control.
Soon we will be sending our kids to a school where they will sit in their isolated learning chambers so they can’t possibly be disturbed or distracted by nearby students. Each child will have their own personal reccess assisstant who will be in charge of that child’s bodily saftey. No child will be allowed to come within a 5 foot diameter of another child. Okay, so I am being overly dramatic here, but what ever happened to the fun of childhood foibles and bruises. If we can’t learn from those experiences, what kind of adults will we be producing? Overly sensitive and hypocondriatic about every little thing.
Besides, who doesn’t love to sit around with friends discussing the childhood broken bones and other ‘badges of honor’ with good friends and sharing laughs about the good old days when we just didn’t care? I know I’ve got a few stories I would be remiss to give up.
Yes, I think we’re being silly, too. My money’s on Deidre being in a moment of bliss just being alive. I wish this were the worst problem our schools have. I’m not painting with too broad a brush. All I really know is that education doesn’t succeed with stifled, constricted students, marching in lockstep with the Principal.
…on the other hand, in the State I live in, the educational system is the world’s largest public toilet. The only really well-educated people in it are those on the payroll.
Despite millions of bucks pumped into it, HS grads cannot read (and think it’s cool), hate-hate-hate anyone who tries to require them to learn and think. God forbid there should be a due date. Teachers here–now, c’mon, you know it takes two to Tango–have given up. They show up, take their pay and live for the same thing students do: SUMMER.
Guys wear their trouser-tops just below their ‘plumbing’, even in schools where uniforms are required. Yes, I said BELOW. With an ultra-long shirt hanging to mid-thigh, they’re covered (they call it ‘Bein’ Ready). Young girls wear acrylic nails, push-up bras, mini-skirts and belly shirts so small and tight if we were to see, say, a 30 year-old on the street at night wearing the outfit, we’d know we had wandered into the Red Light district.
Where are their parents? Where are Administrators? Where is the School Board? Am I the only one left in Oklahoma who believes in an educated populace? Everyone is paying for an education. I think we should deliver it. But, y’know, I was just sayin’…
We all know what a Birdie (1 under) and a Bogey (one over) are. Now there’s a Lewinsky. Its when the shot lands three feet from the hole.
