I’m a big believer in upgrading to new versions of software when it’s out of the BETA stage, because it affords much easier support. When something goes wrong, I don’t want to be treated to choruses of “That was fixed 3 upgrades ago!” and it’s very easy to find yourself one, two, then three upgrades behind… and even more!

Not to mention that with Wordpress it can be dicey. We all use so many widgets and plugins and different themes that I always hold my breath when I do an upgrade.

I found this program: Wordpress Upgrade Preflight Check , a widget that you can access through your Options menu that will go through the widgets and themes you’re using and alert you of possible problems before you upgrade to Wordpress 2.3.

I’m so glad I did this, because I’ve discovered that the ultra-cool theme I’ve put in for my newest blog… isn’t at all compatible and would have been broken if I had tried to upgrade it, making my site unreadable. So because of that and the fact that I’ve realised it’s not the best when it comes to SEO (it only displays one recent article) I’ve decided to go with a different theme before making the switch.

I’m so glad I found this widget, because it enabled me to take care of potential problems before they became problems! This could have easily cost me half a day (at least) trying to figure out if I hadn’t used the Preflight Check!

Little side note: Going to be a light posting week for me because I’m a tad under the weather.  :)

I wish I could tell you this title, “My Journey With The Naked Celebrity” means I’m having an affair with Brad Pitt, but no, I’ve started a new blog. Yes, I may be perilously close to having to face my blog addiction, but until then, I thought I’d tell you about it.

This blog, called The Naked Celebrity , is my first attempt at a blog that is designed primarily as a money-generator. I do find the topic interesting and the writing for it fun. What I mean by “made it as a money-generator” is that when I set it up, I decided to do so with monetizing in mind.

Becky, over at Preblogging, has some great tips for to follow before setting up your blog, including choosing your blogging niche .

I would also recommend that before you get started on creating a blog (that isn’t a personal blog) that you check out this article on problogger about choosing your niche . Despite having the same topics, the articles have a vastly different focus.

So when I decided to get started, I took the following steps:

1. Choose the niche.

After investigating what people are searching for using Google Trends and Google Adwords (which shows the popularity and competitiveness of terms that show up on Adsense and how much advertisers will pay for these terms), I decided to go with something in the celebrity vein.

“But, Jayne… you can’t stand celebrities.” That’s right, and so I realised that this could work in my favor. If you’ve been to my humor blog Bitter Women, you know that I love a good rant. So instead of just presenting the news like a thousand other blogs and websites do, I would put my own slant on it, and give it my own voice.

Ranting about how idiotic celebrities are would just never get old for me. :)

In order to create something different, I created a set of characters named Auntie Maude, Cousin Rose, and Uncle Horace who give their own opinions and funny observations about the silly gossip stories that abound.

2. Choose the Title

I chose “The Naked Celebrity” because putting those two words together turns it into search engine gold, but also because I liked the double-meaning.

3. Choose the design

I am so happy with the wordpress theme I chose, called The Morning After. It gives it a magazine feel, which I hope looks professional and slick. I felt that if I was going for the “gossip mag” feel, I didn’t want it to look too “homey” and it even veers away slightly from the traditional blog look. It IS slightly complex, as there are a lot of images to upload in various places for each article, but readers want pictures and eye-candy, so an image-rich layout is great, and I’m very pleased with how it’s turned out.

I’ve also picked this layout because the advertising fits well within it, and doesn’t look sloppy.

So now all that’s left is the final bit…

4. Fill it up with some content so it doesn’t look too bare.

Right now I only have a few articles up, so I need to add about a dozen more within a few days to fill out that celebrity name “category” list on the left.

Since this is my first attempt at a real monetised blog that is set up with SEO in mind, and working for search users, it’s something different for me, so I’m letting you in on my process, so you can learn along with me. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

*Note: I can report that some things seem to already be going well, even after just two days! I’ve already started getting click-throughs from Technorati on the celeb names. Why is a few clicks a big deal? None of my other blogs get any traffic from technorati at all! LOL

Be A Community Builder…. And by this I don’t mean be “the guy that fixes everyone’s plumbing”, although if you want to be one of those, I hear the pay is good.

Community Builder

About Blogging is adding two new things to promote a sense of community. One is Lucia’s Linky Love . It’s a dofollow wordpress plugin that will enable commenters to get linkbacks to their own sites. (Currently, if you leave a comment on a blog, you do not get link “credit” for it in Google/Technorati with relation to their rankings. This plugin fixes that.) However, to prevent “human comment spammers leaving insipid, irrelevant comments just to get link-juice”, I’m setting this plugin to reward only users who comment 3 times. This way if you’re a regular participant, you get some linky love! (Adding later today! Post first… fiddle with Wordpress second… one of my self-discipline blogging rules. ;) )

Another idea is one I’ve seen in the blogoshere called “IReply”. This is just a pledge that many bloggers choose to make saying “If you comment on my blog, I will reply.” Sometimes that can be difficult, depending on what people say, but over at DayJobNuker.com , he took the idea one step further, and I think it’s great, and very workable!

I’ve made a couple of changes for practicality, and added one point…

…for every new person who leaves a comment on my blog for the first time. I will:

1) Visit your blog or website
2) Visit Several Pages
3) Leave a comment on a post if have something to say
4) If I like your articles/posts, I will bookmark them in Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, or other appropriate Social Network.
5) If you tell me that you have subscribed to my RSS feed then I will subscribe to yours as well.

Jaynes Note: It is against Google’s (and probably others) TOS to ask for or promise to click-throughs on ads, therefore I’ve modified the “pledge” a bit.

These are fantastic, and I’m going to start doing all of these things right away!

If you’re willing to take the Community Builder pledge(ish), saying that you’re willing to make an effort to do these things for your readers, then why not make a post or put up an icon saying so? I’ve created four icons… two black and two white (one set is smaller to fit on a sidebar). If you ask me, I will also gladly send you the layered png files so you can recolor or rework them for your own site. (My email address is on the header image.)

If you do that and link to this post, I will also add a link to your post/blog here!

Here are the other images I created … use them freely!

There are a few Wordpress plugins that I think are an absolute most, and high on the list is the TinyMCE Advanced plugin .

What this plugin does is give you many more options in your WYSIWYG editor with Wordpress. From the official description:

“This plugin adds 16 plugins to TinyMCE: Advanced hr, Advanced Image, Advanced Link, Context Menu, Emotions (Smilies), Full Screen, IESpell, Layer, Media, Nonbreaking, Print, Search and Replace, Style, Table, Visual Characters and XHTML Extras. Together these plugins can add over 40 new buttons to the toolbar, which is now two rows plus one hidden row.”

You can see the difference in options here:

This addition will enable you to make more visually appealing posts, and to do it easily!

Add Tables
With Ease
No More Handcoding them!

It even allows you to add javascript to a popup link .

There’s much more, like custom <HR> tags, and more features when you add a link, erasing formatting, and changing a font easily.

Forget plugins that give you maps, the weather, and flashing whoozy-whats.  This plugin will help you make your posts stand out.
